Political Campaigns Policy
Extra rules for political parties, candidates, campaigners and their channels (for example the Rally app): transparency, donations, data and conduct.
1. Who this covers
Any channel or business that campaigns for or against a political party, candidate, referendum outcome or elected office holder, or that raises money for such a campaign. It adds to the Acceptable Use Policy and the Advertising Policy.
2. Verification and transparency
- Political channels must be run by a verified business or registered party, with a named person responsible.
- Digital campaign material must carry the imprint the law requires (in the UK, under the Elections Act 2022: who promoted it and on whose behalf, with their address). The channel is responsible for its imprints.
- Paid political promotion on our platform is shown with a “Paid for by” label naming the payer.
3. Donations
- You must only accept donations that are lawful for you, including the UK rules on permissible donors and the reporting of donations under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000, and the equivalent rules where you campaign.
- You are responsible for checking donors, keeping records and reporting to the electoral authority. We provide records of payments made through your channel, but we do not check permissibility for you.
4. Personal data
Political opinions are special category data. You must have a lawful basis and a valid condition for processing them under UK and EU data protection law, respect objections to direct marketing, and only contact people by e-mail or text where the law allows (for example under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations). You act as the controller of your supporters’ data; we act as your processor under the Data Processing Addendum.
5. Conduct
- No false statements about how, when or where to vote, or about a candidate’s personal character or conduct that are knowingly untrue.
- No intimidation or harassment of voters, candidates, officials or journalists; no deceptive impersonation of another party, candidate or authority; no coordinated inauthentic behaviour (fake accounts or networks).
- We may limit or remove content, and suspend a channel, under the Enforcement policy, and we keep the decisions on record. We apply these rules equally to every party and viewpoint.
